Does Wegovy Need to Be Refrigerated? How Long It Can Be Out of the Fridge
The Wegovy injection is stored in the refrigerator. What people usually want to know is how long it survives outside one, and the label has a specific answer that depends on which Wegovy you have: the single-dose pen and syringe get 28 days, the FlexTouch pen gets 56 days once you have started it, and the Wegovy tablets need no fridge at all. This page sorts the figures by form and then covers flying, compounded semaglutide and when to discard.
The short answer
Wegovy injection: refrigerate at 36 to 46 F (2 to 8 C) in the carton. Single-dose pen or syringe: if needed, up to 28 days at 46 to 86 F before the cap is removed. FlexTouch pen: 56 days at room temperature or in the fridge once started. Never frozen, never above 86 F. Wegovy tablets: room temperature, 68 to 77 F, in the original bottle.
The label figures, form by form
These are the storage statements from the US prescribing information and the patient Instructions for Use for Wegovy (Novo Nordisk, DailyMed label published 30 June 2026). Check the leaflet in your own box, because labels are updated.
| Form | Store | Out of the fridge | Throw away if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-dose pen | Fridge, 36 to 46 F, in the carton | If needed, before the cap is removed: 46 to 86 F for up to 28 days | Frozen, exposed to light or above 86 F, out of the fridge 28 days or longer, or after use |
| Single-dose prefilled syringe | Fridge, 36 to 46 F, in the carton | If needed: 46 to 86 F for up to 28 days. Record the date it came out | Frozen, not used within 28 days, or after use |
| FlexTouch pen (several doses) | Fridge before first use | After first use: 56 days in the fridge or at room temperature (label 59 to 86 F, patient instructions 68 to 77 F) | Frozen, exposed to light or above 86 F, or out of the fridge 56 days or longer |
| Tablets | 68 to 77 F, original bottle, dry place | Excursions to 59 to 86 F are permitted | The label gives no discard rule; keep it in the original bottle until use |
| Compounded semaglutide vial | Fridge; follow the pharmacy label | No label allowance. Ask the pharmacy | Frozen, or past the beyond-use date |
What the 28 days actually means
It applies to the single-dose pen and the single-dose syringe, it is a "if needed" allowance rather than a storage plan, and the label ties it to the pen or syringe still being in its original carton with the cap on. Heat and light are the limits: the label says to throw the pen away if it has been exposed to light or to temperatures above 86 F. The prefilled syringe instructions add a practical step, which is to write the date it left the fridge so the 28 days can be counted, and not to warm it with hot water or a microwave.
The FlexTouch pen works the other way round. Before its first use it is a fridge item. After first use, the 56 days run from that first injection, not from when you took the pen out of the box, and the pen is discarded at 56 days even with medicine left in it. The two Novo Nordisk documents quote slightly different room temperature ranges for it, 59 to 86 F in the clinician label and 68 to 77 F in the patient instructions; the narrower range is the safer one to live in.
Wegovy tablets are a different case
The oral Wegovy label has no cold chain at all: store at 68 to 77 F, with excursions to 59 to 86 F permitted, in the original bottle until use, in a dry place away from moisture. If your question was really about the pill, the answer is no, and the thing to avoid is damp, not warmth. The injection is the one with the fridge.
Flying with Wegovy
Carry it in your cabin bag so you decide where it sits. The label rules are freezing and heat, and neither is visible in a checked bag. At the checkpoint the rule is TSA's rule for medically necessary liquids.
TSA's own wording, from its Disabilities and Medical Conditions page (read 7 October 2026):
- "TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your flight, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection."
- "Before the screening begins, inform the TSA officer that you have medically necessary liquids and/or medications. Place them in a bin or bowl separate from other property, along with accessories associated with your liquid medication such as freezer packs, IV bags, pumps and syringes."
- "Ice packs, freezer packs, gel packs and other accessories may be presented at the screening checkpoint in a frozen, partially frozen or melted state to keep medically necessary items cool."
The rule is written for medically necessary liquids in general and does not name a drug. TSA adds that a medically necessary liquid which alarms gets additional screening, and if the alarm cannot be resolved the item may not be allowed, so leave yourself time. Rules change; check tsa.gov before you fly. Outside the US, medicines are handled under each airport's own rules; EU airports exempt medicines from the 100 ml limit under Regulation 2015/1998, and the storage case guide has that text.
Where a cooler earns its place
The single-dose pen's 28 days at up to 86 F covers most trips without any cooling at all, so for a normal holiday a cooler is optional. It starts to earn its place when the trip is hot, long or hotel-fridge-free: a car trip in summer, a week somewhere above 86 F, or several pens to carry. The peptide fridge guide compares what each type of cooler holds.
Of the small battery units, the VialHaus Cold is a thermoelectric box with a 13,600 mAh battery (10 to 20 hours rated) that holds 36 to 46 F in rooms up to about 75 F and runs warmer in a hot car or a room above about 80 F. It is built around vials: the tray takes 28 upright, and pens lie flat in a side bay with an inside size of 7.3 x 4.1 x 1.6 in, so measure your pen before you order. It costs 299 dollars, ships from a US warehouse in 3 to 8 days, and is a storage and travel box, not a medical device (disclosure: same founder as the Bureau).
Compounded semaglutide
A compounded vial has no manufacturer stability study behind it, so neither the 28 nor the 56 days is a rule for it. The pharmacy's label and beyond-use date are the rule. More on what to ask them in compounded semaglutide; research-grade powder is covered in the peptide storage guide.
Signs a pen or syringe should be discarded
- It has been frozen, even once.
- It has been above 86 F, or exposed to light outside the carton.
- It has been out of the fridge for 28 days or more (single-dose forms) or 56 days or more (FlexTouch).
- The solution is not clear and colorless, or has particles in it. The label says to use the injection only if it is clear, colorless and particle-free.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wegovy need to be refrigerated?
The injection does. Store the single-dose pen, single-dose syringe and FlexTouch pen at 36 to 46 F (2 to 8 C) in the original carton. Wegovy tablets are the exception: they are kept at 68 to 77 F (20 to 25 C) in the original bottle, away from moisture.
How long can Wegovy be out of the fridge?
The single-dose pen and the single-dose prefilled syringe can be kept at 46 to 86 F (8 to 30 C) in the carton for up to 28 days, if needed, before the cap is removed. A FlexTouch pen that has been started can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 56 days.
Does Wegovy need to be refrigerated after first use?
Only for the single-dose forms, which are used once and thrown away. A FlexTouch pen in use can be stored in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 56 days. The label's clinician section gives 59 to 86 F; the patient Instructions for Use give 68 to 77 F. Staying inside 68 to 77 F satisfies both.
When should I throw Wegovy away?
The label says to throw the single-dose pen or syringe away if it has been frozen, exposed to light or to temperatures above 86 F (30 C), has been out of the fridge for 28 days or longer, or after use. A FlexTouch pen is thrown away if frozen, exposed to light or heat above 86 F, or after 56 days out of the fridge.
Can I take Wegovy on a plane?
Yes. TSA allows medically necessary liquids in reasonable quantities above the usual 3.4 oz limit, but you must declare them at the checkpoint and put them in a separate bin. Ice packs and gel packs may be presented frozen, partially frozen or melted.
Does compounded semaglutide follow the Wegovy label?
No. A compounded vial has no manufacturer stability data, so the Wegovy 28 or 56 days does not apply. Follow the pharmacy label and its beyond-use date.
