Semaglutide Hair Loss: What the Label Reports and Why It Happens

The short answer

Hair loss is a labelled Wegovy (semaglutide) side effect: 3.3% of people on 2.4 mg reported it in the pooled obesity trials against 1% on placebo, and 5.8% on 7.2 mg. The label says the hair loss was associated with weight reduction, which fits temporary shedding after rapid weight loss (telogen effluvium).

Hair loss is on the semaglutide labels, and the Wegovy label says plainly that the hair loss reactions were associated with weight reduction. That points to the usual explanation, a temporary shedding phase called telogen effluvium, rather than the drug acting on hair follicles. This page gives the label numbers, the explanation, and what is and is not known. It is a research reference, not medical advice.

Why hair sheds during weight loss

Telogen effluvium is a common cause of diffuse, non-scarring hair loss, usually precipitated by physiological stress such as childbirth or sudden weight loss, and it has a high rate of remission (J Dermatol Sci 2021). It is not a direct effect of a drug on follicles. A second review describes excessive shedding as a common complaint, mostly in women, and cautions clinicians against dismissing it (Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol 2019). The pattern in the label fits: the rates are higher in women than in men, and higher at the 7.2 mg dose, where weight loss is greater.

What is not established

  • The labels do not say how long shedding lasts on semaglutide or whether it fully resolves. The telogen effluvium reviews report a high rate of remission in general, not in GLP-1 users specifically.
  • Observational cohort studies of hair loss with semaglutide and tirzepatide have been published in dermatology journals (J Am Acad Dermatol 2025, J Am Acad Dermatol 2026). We could not read their results in full, so we do not quote them, and the label trial rates above are the figures we can stand behind.
  • No label names a treatment. The telogen effluvium review states there are no targeted treatments for managing it (J Dermatol Sci 2021).
  • Thinning that continues at the temples or crown, or that does not settle, is a different question from shedding that follows weight loss and belongs with a dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

Does semaglutide cause hair loss?

It is a labelled side effect of Wegovy: 3.3% on 2.4 mg and 5.8% on 7.2 mg, against 1% on placebo. The label says the hair loss reactions were associated with weight reduction, and shedding after rapid weight loss is a recognised cause of hair loss on its own.

Is hair loss from Ozempic permanent?

The Ozempic and Wegovy labels do not say. Telogen effluvium, the usual explanation for hair shedding after sudden weight loss, has a high rate of remission, but no study we could read reports how long it lasts in semaglutide users.

Who gets hair loss on semaglutide?

In the Wegovy label it is reported more in women than in men: 4% against 0.9% in the 2.4 mg pool, and 8.4% against 0.2% on 7.2 mg.

Do tirzepatide users lose hair too?

Yes. The Zepbound label lists hair loss at 4% to 5% on 5 to 15 mg against 1% on placebo.
