Short answer. Tirzepatide is an approved drug, sold as Zepbound and Mounjaro, and the legal way to buy it is on a prescription, from LillyDirect Pharmacy or a retail pharmacy. Lilly's self-pay prices, checked 2 November 2026, run from $299 a month (2.5 mg) to $449 a month (7.5 to 15 mg, when refilled within 45 days), and Mounjaro starts at $499. With commercial coverage Lilly's card can bring it to as little as $25. FDA found the shortage resolved on 19 December 2024, and says compounded drugs should only be used where an approved drug cannot meet a patient's needs. Vials labelled for research use are a separate, unapproved market that FDA urges consumers not to buy.

These are the prices on Lilly's LillyDirect Zepbound page, read on 2 November 2026. Lilly defines a month as 28 days, and says terms can change at any time. The price for 7.5 to 15 mg applies when the prescription is refilled within 45 days; Lilly lists the regular price if not. Lilly notes that 2.5 mg is a starting dose and is not approved as a maintenance dose. Needles are bought separately. Lilly's self-pay savings card has caps and ends 31 December 2026, per its terms. Prices were read from Lilly's page, not a quote.

The FDA position on compounded tirzepatide

FDA's compounding timeline (content current as of 1 April 2026) says it found the shortage resolved on 19 December 2024. For state-licensed pharmacies under section 503A, the enforcement discretion ended once a court denied the plaintiffs' injunction motion on 5 March 2025. For outsourcing facilities under section 503B, it ran to 19 March 2025.

FDA's current guidance, FDA's Concerns with Unapproved GLP-1 Drugs Used for Weight Loss (content current as of 1 October 2026), says: "Compounded drugs should only be used in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug." It adds that unapproved versions "do not undergo FDA's review for safety, effectiveness and quality before they are marketed", and it warns of fraudulent compounded products with false labels. The Bureau does not link to or recommend any compounding pharmacy or telehealth platform.

Tirzepatide peptide vials: what stores list today

Peptide stores sell tirzepatide as a vial labelled for research use. These are not Zepbound or Mounjaro. They are not FDA approved, no regulator releases their batches and no recall system stands behind them. On 4 November 2026, 4 of the vendors the Bureau reviews listed them, from $1.60 to $7.00 per mg in stock, before any code. This is not a like for like comparison. The gap between the rows is a gap in oversight as well as price: only the approved route has a finished product that FDA has reviewed. FDA "urges consumers not to purchase these products which are of unknown quality and may be harmful to their health."

What can be checked on a vial certificate

A certificate is a store's own evidence. Check that the lot number matches the vial, that it names the testing laboratory and can be confirmed on the lab's own site, and that mass spectrometry identity sits near the 4813.53 Da molecular weight on the Mounjaro label. Some stores list tirzepatide under a code, such as AMP-2 (TR), Luv TRZ or AR-TRZ, so look for the compound's name on the certificate. Independent records are thin: Finnrick's vendor pages, read on 2 November 2026, showed no rated tirzepatide tests for Amino Club or Luvaminos, while NexaPh rated 76% over 63 tests and Polaris Peptides 80% over 16. Is a tirzepatide peptide vial the same as Zepbound?

No. Zepbound is a finished medicine FDA has reviewed. A research-labelled vial has had no such review, and a certificate from or for the seller is the main evidence of what is in it. No one can say that it is safe for a person.
