What to know before buying SS-31

SS-31 is elamipretide (also coded MTP-131 and Bendavia), a synthetic tetrapeptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, that targets the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding cardiolipin. It is studied in mitochondrial disease, heart failure, neurodegeneration and muscle weakness.

Elamipretide is FDA approved: on 19 September 2025 the FDA granted accelerated approval to Forzinity (elamipretide hydrochloride, Stealth BioTherapeutics) to improve muscle strength in Barth syndrome patients weighing at least 30 kg. That is a prescription drug; SS-31 vials from research vendors are not the approved product and are sold for laboratory research use only.

  • What to match on the certificate: Match the identity line to C32H49N9O5, average molecular weight 639.8 (monoisotopic 639.39), the free peptide; salt forms such as acetate, TFA or hydrochloride weigh more, so check which form the certificate reports. Look for HPLC purity and mass spec identity on the same lot number as the vial.
  • Vial sizes: Research stores sell it as 10 mg and 50 mg vials; the 50 mg vial is usually far cheaper per mg, so compare the same size.
  • What it costs: 6 stores the Bureau reviews list SS-31; on 1 November 2026 the in-stock list prices ran from $3.60 per mg (PSPeptides, 50 mg vial) to $8.00 per mg (Ascension Peptides, 10 mg vial), before any code.
  • Storage: Suppliers of the reference compound state the powder keeps 3 years at -20 C, and a stock solution 1 month at -20 C or 1 year at -80 C.

How the Bureau picks

The pick is the vendor at the top of the Bureau's vendor list that stocks SS-31. Scores come from the scorecard, which weighs lab documentation, consistency, shipping and price, and a vendor cannot buy a score. Before any order, match the lot number on the vial to a certificate from a named third-party lab. More in the vendor scorecard and the SS-31 guide.
